Zoological research. Entomology
Entomology - (from the Greek éntoma - insects and ... logia is the study of insects) is a brunch of zoology. Initially, entomology studied all arthropods, but gradually, due to the huge number of insect species (exceeding the number of other animal, plant and microorganism species), it got limited to the class of insects; the study of other classes of arthropods became the subject of independent sciences (arachnology - the science of arachnids, carcinology - the science of crustaceans, etc.). As a result of study of insects by orders and families more separate disciplines emerged within entomology - coleopterology (coleoptera), lepidopterology (lepidoptera), myrmecology (ants), and others. Modern entomology is an integrated science that studies the anatomy and life of insects, their individual and historical development, the variety of forms, spatiotemporal distribution on Earth, relationships with the environment, etc.
Insects make 2/3 of the total number of animal species on our planet, i.e. more than 1 million species known to science. Every year over 70,000 new species are described by scientists entomologists in the world. More than 100,000 species of insects have been recorded in Russia.
The class of insects is subdivided into 32 orders. Entomologists classify insects into three groups based on the type of metamorphosis they undergo: with direct development, incomplete and complete metamorphosis.
Entomological research on the territory of Yakutia has almost 200 years history. The first printed information about insects appeared in the 19th century (Gebler, 1817, 1830; Menetrie, 1859; Hertz 1898, 1903, etc.).
By the end of the 20th century about 4750 species of insects belonging to 17 orders were identified in the fauna of Yakutia. To date, over 1600 insects species were added to the list which reached 6400 species, or more than 60% of the expected volume of fauna.
Insects are the most accessible object for study, for the development students’ cognitive activities and creative abilities, practical research in nature. This program has been designed to assist schoolchildren in the proper organization of insect research using available entomological techniques. This program provides the simplest and easiest methods for studying insects designed for a wide range of beginning researchers.
